Mariah Carey is working with film director, producer and screenwriter Lee Daniels to adapt her memoir into a new TV series.
The singer released her hit memoir ‘The Meaning of Mariah Carey’ in 2020, which went on to become a New York Times bestseller, as part of her #MC30 celebrations.
And the tome is set to be the basis for a new series centred on the Hero singer’s life and career.
Speaking on Z100 with host Garrett Vogel, who asked if she would ever consider staging a musical based on her life and hits, Mariah says: “We did the book, and we are getting it together. I’m working with my friend Lee Daniels. And we are talking about the adaptation of my book. I would rather do that.”
“Lee is probably going to hear this and kill me but it’s probably going to be an eight-part series.”
Earlier this year, Mariah teased details of the project in a fan chat on Twitter Spaces, but insisted she couldn’t “say too much” about their plans.
The revelation came after fans shared their appreciation for her track Alone in Love, which initially appeared on Mariah’s self-titled debut album.
As they called for “justice” for the song, which the diva began writing aged 14, she said: “Can I tell you where I think the justice is gonna really come for you guys?
“In the movie. In the Lee Daniels adaptation that we’re filming. And I’m not allowed to give too much away, but I spoke with him today.
“We didn’t talk about [Alone in Love] specifically, but I know that that needs to be really emphasised, because that was me playing it on my mum’s piano and there’s a whole bunch of things…”
The forthcoming project is not the first time Mariah and Lee have worked together; the pair collaborated on 2009 movie ‘Precious, which he directed and produced and in which she starred, along with ‘The Butler’.
In addition to working on the movie, Mariah has been working on new music and released Somewhat Loved (There You Go Breakin’ My Heart) with Jam & Lewis in June.
A new studio album is also on the way, along with the star’s annual holiday celebrations, including a new Apple TV+ special.
