Stevie Nicks’ favourite song to perform live is a deep cut from her early Fleetwood Mac years that was only finally released in 2014.
The star’s most recent solo album, 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault, saw Stevie dig deep and record 14 tracks that previously existed only as demos from sessions in the ’80s and ’90s (plus a new solo version of Twisted, from the Twister soundtrack, and a cover of Vanessa Carlton’s Carousel).
Speaking with Digital Journal, the singer, who will release her new single, Show Them the Way, on Friday, opens up about her new 24 Karat Gold: The Concert movie – and the surprising track she loves performing on stage.
“This was one of the most important records that I’ve ever done, in my opinion,” she explains. “I wanted to go back and pick them up. It had 16 songs that I always planned to re-do because they were all recorded at some point and I wasn’t happy with how they originally came out.
“The song If You Were My Love is a ballad that I love to sing so much, and I wanted to make sure that it was perfect. It’s the song that I love to sing most on stage with the girls,” she adds.
If You Were My Love dates back to Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk era (’79), and was later demoed for a number of solo records, including Bella Donna (’81) and Street Angel (’94). It, along with Starshine and Belle Fleur, from 24 Karat Gold – plus In You Dreams songs New Orleans and Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream), title tracks Bella Donna and Wild Heart, Buckingham Nicks classic Crying In The Night, and the unreleased Gold and Braid – features in the film.
“When you can add six or seven new songs into a setlist, it changes the whole show, and it makes it seem like the whole show was brand new,” Nicks shares.
“Even the older songs that weren’t on the 24 Karat Gold album become new again because of the six or seven new songs that nobody has ever heard before. When I walked off stage, that whole show felt new to me, and when you watch the film, you can really see that.”
