Natalie Imbruglia has shared the title track from the upcoming seventh studio album.
Due September 4, ‘Algorithm‘ is the Australian-British star’s first since ‘Firebird‘ in 2021 and was born of a tough mental health struggle for the star, which she channeled into her music.
Following on from lead release ‘Upside Down‘, the electronic pop number was inspired by Imbruglia’s own social media scrolling addiction, on which she says: “It’s like you’ve opened one trapdoor and you’re falling endlessly through one after another.
“I’m a deeply spiritual person, so the title comes from a place of real concern for the world we’re living in. We’re in a dark place and psychological warfare is being waged upon us. We need to talk about that and where our thoughts are going.
“This is about sparking that conversation.”

A collaboration with MyRiot, David Sneddon, Fraser T Smith, Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, Anu Pillai, Tobie Tripp, Mark Crew and Dan Priddy, she says of the project: “I chose to work with collaborators who also co-produce so from start to finish we were all so invested in every song.
“I really hope that people get as much joy from listening to this record as we did making it. And that they dance their arses off.”
Touching on the personal circumstances that inspired the music, she adds: “This was by far the most fun I’ve ever had making a record.
“It also happened to coincide with the most challenging time I’ve had with my mental health. This is the beauty of music and artistic expression. You can take something dark and turn it into light.”
‘Algorithm’ is released on September 4 and available to pre-order from Amazon, HMV, Rough Trade, Townsend and more.
