Kim Wilde was a massive fan of Nirvana’s cover of her classic hit Kids In America.
The track saw Kim debut on the charts worldwide in 1981 and has been covered by numerous artists, including rockers Nirvana and Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters.
Speaking to the launch issue of Retro Pop, the ‘80s icon opens up on the success of the single and admits she was delighted when the group tackled her iconic release.
“I was chuffed when Nirvana and the Foo Fighters covered Kids In America,” she says. “Dave Grohl really does seem to like pop music. He was eulogising ABBA recently.
“So far he hasn’t been in touch with me to perform together, but he did that performance with Rick Astley a while back, so who knows?”
She adds: “I’m lucky! Kids in America is an incredible song to have in your arsenal!”
Kim is set to hit the road in 2022 for her ‘Greatest Hits Tour’, featuring her biggest hits and fan favourites from her 40 year career.
Of the trek, she adds: “When we started planning the show, we plunged into the back catalogue so we had fun putting as many of the songs into the set as we could.
“It’s going be the best of the best. I have had costumes made which are waiting in the wardrobe.”
Following the release of her recent retrospective, ‘Pop Don’t Stop – Greatest Hits’, Kim is thrilled to be celebrating four decades in the charts.
“Time has served us old ‘80s stars well,” she smiles. “It’s proved to everyone the enduring commitment we gave to pop music back then. We weren’t just playing around with it, it came from deep inside. That energy is endless. That energy is not going anywhere.
“It’s powerful, which is why I am left a quivering wreck when I hear that song in the new John Lewis advert [Lola Young’s cover of Phil Oakey’s Together in Electric Dreams] as I tuck into my fish finger sandwich with tomato sauce.
“It’s lovely to hear a song that was a hit when I was around doing so well now. These songs last forever.”
