Britney Spears has been invited to testify before Congress as she continues to battle for the removal of her conservatorship.
Last month, Britney spoke out about her 13-year-old conservatorship, telling Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny it had left her “traumatised”.
And after hearing her plea to have the arrangement scrapped, Republican congressman Matt Gaetz extended the invite to the Toxic hitmaker.
Alongside Republican Congress members Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Burgess Owens of Utah and Andy Biggs of Arizona, Gaetz reached out to the star, expressing his “deep concern” for her wellbeing.
“The United States Congress should hear your story and be inspired to bipartisan action. What happened to you should never happen to any other American,” a letter reads.
“Your life, liberty, and happiness have been taken from you. Please take advantage of the empowerment that public congressional testimony can unlock.”
Following the broadcast of the New York Times’ ‘Framing Britney Spears’ documentary earlier this year, Gaetz previously approached Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler to hold federal hearings about the singer’s case.
Along with Ohio congressman Jim Jordan, he wrote: “(It is) incumbent upon our Committee to convene a hearing to examine whether Americans are trapped unjustly in conservatorships.”
An attorney for Britney’s father went on to issue a statement, insisting: “Jamie Spears has diligently and professionally carried out his duties as one of Britney’s conservators, and his love for his daughter and dedication to protecting her is clearly apparent to the court.”
Following Britney’s court appearance, fans supporting the #FreeBritney movement and stars took to social media to lend their support. And after speaking out, Britney issued a statement to fans, apologising for hiding her true feelings for so long.
She penned: “I don’t want people to think my life is perfect because IT’S DEFINITELY NOT AT ALL… and if you have read anything about me in the news this week… you obviously really know now it’s not!!!!
“I apologize for pretending like I’ve been ok the past two years… I did it because of my pride and I was embarrassed to share what happened to me.”
Fellow pop star and Britney’s former Disney co-star Christina Aguilera is among those who have advocated for the singer’s freedom from the conservatorship, insisting: “To be silenced, ignored, bullied or denied support by those ‘close’ to you is the most depleting, devastating and demeaning thing imaginable.
“My heart goes out to Britney. She deserves all the TRUE love and support in the world.”
