The Fizz are headed back into the studio with Mike Stock to finish work on their new studio album.
The group is celebrating 40 years since Bucks Fizz won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 with their classic hit Making Your Mind Up, and there looks to be more iconic tracks on the horizon as the band prepares to lay down vocals on for their latest LP.
Speaking to Retro Pop, the Stock Aitken Waterman legend confirms The Fizz were returning to the studio before the end of the month to resume work on the project – the follow-up to their 2020 release ‘Smoke & Mirrors’.
“I’m just about to embark on another album with The Fizz. It’s been a difficulty to get them in the studio during lockdown, but we’ve set the date for it,” he says.
Despite the sessions creeping ever-closer, Mike reveals he’s yet to start writing for the album, explaining: “About two or three days before that, I collect all of my ideas and then I’ll sit in a room and put them together with a drum pattern and a chord sequence.
“Then get the band in to sing the basic song and send the band home while me and my team finish the recordings.
“That’s how I like to do it: you get them down as quickly as possible over the rough structure,” he adds. “And then you can play around with it and get it how you like to hear it.”
Although Mike insists he always comes to sessions prepared, he admits he “would prefer to trust [his] instincts” and “have lots of thoughts then collect them” than overwork his ideas.
“I prefer to think, ‘Well, if I’ve got the guys in on Wednesday, I’ll get my thoughts together on Tuesday, fresh for the session’,” he says.
To mark four decades since their victory, The Fizz hosted a massive day of live stream events on April 4, featuring “interviews, stories from the past, songs, quizzes, unseen photos and a few surprises.”
Additionally, the group has also announced the release of a new coffee table book, featuring photography of the band from throughout the years.
“The book will feature lots of unseen photo shoot shots and photos from the groups personal collections,” promised The Fizz. “Some real gems!”
Cheryl previously teased big plans for the group in 2021, revealing: “It’s our 40th anniversary next year and we are really excited about it!
“There’s all sorts of fabulous things in the pipeline… the main thing is that we’re going into the studio with Mike Stock to do album number four for The Fizz.
It was also confirmed the group had booked a gig at Indigo at The O2 to celebrate their 40th – however the show has been put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
