Sophie Ellis-Bextor became a surprise lockdown saviour in 2020, with her Friday night Kitchen Discos providing escapism, joy and hits aplenty amid the struggles of the pandemic.
The success spawned a new greatest hits collection, ‘Songs from the Kitchen Disco‘, and subsequent tour – and now the Can’t Fight this Feeling hitmaker is preparing to open up on her two decades in music with her first-ever new memoir.
According to Sophie, ‘Spinning Plates: Thoughts on Men, Music and Motherhood‘ is filled with “stories and thoughts and honesty,” detailing her early years, work with Theaudience, solo success and motherhood.
“Part memoir, part musings, Sophie will write about the conjuring act of adulthood and motherhood and how her experience of working while raising her five sons has given her the inescapable lesson of how to navigate life in the face of failure and imperfection,” says a press release.
“Covering relationships, good enough parenting, the importance of delusion and dancing, Sophie writes about the things that take on greater importance as life becomes more complicated.
“From the non negotiables (solitude, music, glitter) to the unimportant (clean hair, deadlines, appropriate behaviour), this is a book about learning from our experiences and not being afraid to smash a few plates for the sake of what we actually need want and value.”
After announcing the memoir on Sunday (Feb 21) evening, the Murder on the Dance Floor singer shared her nerves over releasing the book.
I’ve been writing a book! It started off as writing little essays about stuff and then grew into an autobiography. I’ve filled it with stories and thoughts and honesty.. yikes ? https://t.co/7ZiikxIkQC pic.twitter.com/NxEWwbWrZN

“It’s weird, I felt very relaxed about writing an autobiography but now I’ve put it out in the open I feel like I might have well have posted to say ‘guys I’m going to run down the street naked next week if you’re interested?’,” tweeted Sophie.
‘Spinning Plates: Thoughts on Men, Music and Motherhood’ is due for release on October 7 and available to pre-order now.
Its turning into a packed year for Sophie, who will see her first three albums – ‘Read My Lips’, ‘Shoot From The Hip’ and ‘Trip The Light Fantastic’ – pressed on vinyl for the first time in Summer 2021.
In addition to hosting the third season of her hit podcast, ‘Spinning Plates’, the Take Me Home (A Girl Like Me) star is also working on her seventh album, which is due for release soon.
In our review of ‘Songs from the Kitchen Disco’, Retro Pop called Sophie a “brilliant pop star and one of Britain’s premier songwriters,” noting that “20 years into her career, her music is as wonderful as ever”.
