Shania Twain feared her music career was set to fail after critics branded her “a flash in the pan”.
The singer arrived on the scene in 1993 with her self-titled debut album, but it wasn’t until 1995’s ‘The Woman in Me’ that she rocketed to the top of the charts.
But it wasn’t plain sailing for the star, who tells Home Now Radio on Apple Music Hits she’s “surprised [she] ever had any hits”.
“I was criticized as an artist,” says Shania. “I’m surprised I ever had any hits actually when I read them now.
“So for example, part of the quote from one of my reviews was, ‘She’s America’s best paid lap dancer in Nashville. She’s hot, but can she sing? Is Shania just a flash in the pan? The most famous midriff in Nashville.’
“So yeah, I ended up having hits anyway. Very satisfying. Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under, released 1995. And what I just quoted were all quotes based on that first single from ‘The Woman in Me’ album.
“I wrote the song. And I was a little bit hurt, I guess, at the harsh critics, not focusing on the music.
“And the fans just wiped all of that hurt away and made the song one of my biggest hits. Thank you, fans.”
Shania recently celebrated 25 years of her classic album with an expanded reissue, featuring a selection of new mixes and live recordings of singles like Any Man of Mine and, You Win My Love and (If You’re Not In It For Love) I’m Outta Here.
It’s not just past hits Shania has her eye on; earlier this year, the star revealed she is “in new music mode” and has written “enough music for three albums”over the past 12 months.
