Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ movie is set to be transformed into a new Broadway musical.
Producer Orin Wolf announced that the 1984 film – about “an up-and-coming rock musician in the Minneapolis club scene, as he contends with a tumultuous home environment, a rival band and a budding romance” – will feature a book by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, based on the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn.
It will feature music from Prince’s iconic soundtrack, which delivered hit singles such as When Doves Cry, Let’s Go Crazy, I Would Die 4 U, Take Me With U and the classic title song.
Production details have yet to be confirmed, however the musical will be directed by Tony nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz when work finally begins.
‘Purple Rain’ earned $100 million worldwide and was added into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2019 for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
Meanwhile, the soundtrack sold over 25 million copies worldwide, winning Prince two Grammys and an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.
