“Queen Elizabeth has been a huge part of my life from childhood to this day, and I will miss her dearly.”

Duran Duran added: “Her Majesty the Queen has presided over the UK for longer than any other British monarch. She dedicated her life to the people and set an extraordinary example to the world throughout her reign. She’s seen changes that are beyond what any of us can imagine. She has faced challenges that she has risen to time and again. Her life has been remarkable in so many ways.

The Queen of the United Kingdom succeeded to the throne in 1952 aged 25 and reigned for 71 years.

Earlier on Thursday, Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying “doctors [were] concerned for Her Majesty’s health” and had “recommended she remain under medical supervision”.

Subsequently, Prince Charles, Camilla, Princess Anne and other members of the Royal Family were reported to be travelling to Balmoral to be with the Queen.

Later in the evening, a statement shared at 6:30pm BST read: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon

“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

In his own statement, Charles said: “The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved mother.

“I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”
