Bros are set to reunite in 2024 with plans for a huge comeback including a movie, tour and their first studio album in over 30 years.
Launching in 1987, the group broke into the upper echelons of the charts with their iconic anthem When Will I Be Famous? and achieved a run of Top 20 hits, including the chart-topping I Owe You Nothing.
Alongside twin brother Luke and their school friend Craig Logan, they released their hit debut LP ‘Push’ in 1988, before Craig quit the act the following year, leaving the siblings to release ‘The Time’ (1989) and ‘Changing Faces’ (1991) as a duo.
Speaking in RETROPOP’s February 2023 issue, Matt exclusively reveals: “There’s been talk of a biopic, which would be an incredible thing to do, and we’d like to do a film based around another record. Not this year, because I’m doing my thing, but next year will be everything Bros: movie, tour and a new album!
“We don’t want to do anything for the sake of it; we both feel that way. We want to do it because we want to see if we can still smash pop culture.”
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the group’s debut and, looking back on that period in his life – which saw them become the youngest band to ever headline Wembley Stadium with their August 1989 ‘Bros in 2 Summer’ show – he admits: “When you go on the road and you’re No. 1 in 38 countries simultaneously, it’s like, ‘Woah’. My musicality is important to me; I was in a band when I was 12, we were not put together, and we always dreamed of it.
“It hurts me in some ways that we broke up when we did. We should have toughed it out a bit, but it was so abusive. The press were so abusive. I understand why Luke had enough of it, but I’m glad that we’ve agreed that we will never break up again.
“The fact that I am the frontman of that band is a real honour, because we did have 12 hits and that kind of legacy – there’s a reason I pinch myself.”
Having returned to the charts last year with his Top 10 solo album ‘The Beautiful Unknown’, Matt is set to hit the road this spring as he launches ‘The Matt Goss Experience’; a tour inspired by his decade-long stint in Las Vegas, featuring the musician playing alongside the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and 15 piece MG Big Band.
Of the shows, which will feature his biggest hits and selections from the Cole Porter songbook, Matt says: “The show’s gonna be a little bit boozy. I would never normally do an interval during a pop show, but the idea is to have people socialise, buy each other drinks, and then come back in the knowing that they’ve got more to come.
“I want people to get dressed up, I want them to flirt and have a drink and a good time. I want to create an immersive environment where like-minded people come – whether you know me or you don’t know me – and I want it to be a very glamorous and fabulous occasion.”
Looking to the future he has plenty to keep him busy; in addition to his latest solo venture, he’s putting pen to paper and writing a self-help book, inspired by the death of his beloved mother Carol, in a bid to help grieving fans deal with loss.
“I realised that I felt very guilty about having a wonderful day. Because my mother had passed so violently, my sister and I just felt like we shouldn’t feel that way, but you’ve got to allow yourself to have good days without the guilt of happiness,” he shares.
“So that’s where I am now; I’ve got to be allowed to enjoy this journey, because we will all say goodbye to each other at some point. And I’ve witnessed that. So I just want to live in that optimistic place and I want people to come along for the ride.”
And Matt shows no sign of slowing down, with talks ongoing to stage his new show as a residency at a “very, very famous” central London venue – and he’s keen to take it to the festival stage too.
“I want this to be an ongoing relationship [with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra],” he smiles. “I’d like to do the festivals; my dream would be to do Glastonbury with a rock and roll band plus a big band and orchestra – and just smash it. I would just love that, make it the complete Matt Goss experience.”
‘The Matt Goss Experience’ launches February 27 in Croydon with tickets on sale now. Matt’s sixth solo album is due in June.
