Elton John is headed to screens as the subject of a forthcoming documentary special.
The music legend – who was previously the subject Rocketman, the musical biopic starring Taron Egerton – will offer an even deeper insight into his life via the project.
According to The Sun, The Pillars of Hercules – inspired by Elton’s middle name, Hercules – will focus on events in the 1970s, and will feature backstage footage of the singer and late The Beatles legend John Lennon.
Elton’s long-time guitarist, Davey Johnstone, has been working on the documentary for years and is hopeful of securing a deal with Netflix to get the project off the ground.
“[The documentary features] stories within the Elton John Band which weren’t shown in the Rocketman biopic,” says a source.
“Davey has Elton and his husband David Furnish’s seal of approval.”
The Pillars of Hercules was previously put on hold for six years to avoid it clashing with Rocketman movie and Elton’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road concert tour.
“It was entirely right that I should do that as I did not want to get in the way of those projects,” he previously told the Greatest Music of All Time podcast.
“I had a lovely conversation with David [Furnish] the other day in which they were really happy that I was going ahead and doing it again.
“Quite honestly I would never do anything, especially of a documentary nature, about anything we did without them being OK with it.
“So with this documentary we are in the throes right now of putting together all the last things we need.”
He added: “There are two more interviews we are looking to get and we will probably be finished with all the recording by late January and then we will go into editing and we will be ready about Easter.”
Elton is set to return to the stage in September 2021 for the rescheduled European leg of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which was postponed amid the pandemic. Tickets are available here.
The jaunt wraps in December, with a North American leg planned for 2022 and more shows in Oceania scheduled for 2023.
According to co-writer Bernie Taupin, he’s also working on new music, although a release date for the project has yet to be confirmed.
Elton will recommence his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Fall 2021, with dates expected to run through 2023 – more info and tickets here.
