The new season of ‘Doctor Who’ is set to feature a Eurovision Song Contest crossover in what’s been described as the show’s “most expensive” episode ever.
A trailer for the forthcoming series of the BBC and Disney+ show – which returns on April 12 – sees UK TV personality Rylan Clark as the host of the Interstellar Song Contest.
A source told The Mirror of the episode: “Think Eurovision in space. There will be singing and there will be competition. Hey, there might even be a cameo for Graham Norton! Anything is possible.”
Speaking of his pride at landing a role in the programme, the presenter – who is a staple of the BBC’s Eurovision presenting team – said: “As a massive Whovian, getting the call to be in ‘Doctor Who’ was a call I’ve always dreamed of getting.
“This episode is all my favourite things about the show with an added song contest set in space. It really is a dream come true. I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It is going to be out of this world.”
Sci-fi author Juno Dawson is behind the episode, which stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor and Varada Sethu as companion Belinda Chandra, with the writer describing it as “ridiculous”.
“It’s the most ridiculous episode they’ve ever done – and the most expensive,” she said.
“I got to write the Doctor. I got to write Belinda. There’s no limit to the imagination on the show. I think it’s the best show ever made. Just you wait. This episode is mahoosive.”
It’s not the only musical link in the upcoming season of ‘Doctor Who’; Anita Dobson, who scored a UK Top 5 hit with Anyone Can Fall In Love, based on the theme music of ‘EastEnders’, returns to the cast as the mysterious Mrs. Flood, with the identity of her character set to be revealed over the eight-episode run.
