Coldplay are planning to write a musical as they wind down their recording career.
Following the release of their ninth LP ‘Music of the Spheres’, featuring the BTS collaboration My Universe, last year, the group confirmed plans to stop recording new material following their 12th album in 2025.
Speaking in a new interview with Ellen Degeneres, Chris admitted the plan to only make three more Coldplay albums “feels right to us”.
“I think we’ll keep touring, and we’ll always be together as a group of musicians and friends,” he explained. “But I think the story of our albums ends then.”
He went on to confirm one of the projects would be a “movie musical” and joked it could be called East Side Story.
“I think, over time, we’ve learned… we’re so lucky that we get to just follow what feels right,” he added.
“And that’s what we’ve decided to do. That’s why our music changes a bit: sometimes we lose people and we get other people in.
“But, really, it’s become so fun since we just had the privilege of following what feels correct. Everybody should do it.”
Coldplay’s latest album was preceded by lead track Higher Power, which they premiered via live link to astronauts on the International Space Station.
In a review of the album, Retro Pop said ‘Music of the Spheres’ is “well crafted” but “lacking in excitement and spontaneity”.
The album is available on CD and limited vinyl.
