German pop trio Alphaville are revisiting two of their classic albums from the ’80s for new remastered and expanded re-releases.

The group, which shot to fame in 1984 with debut album ‘Forever Young’, will reissue ‘Afternoons in Utopia (’86) and ‘The Breathtaking Blue’ (’89) in May, featuring remastered audio and a host of bonus features.

‘Afternoons in Utopia’, which includes the singles Dance With Me, Universal Daddy and Jerusalem, comes in 1LP and 2CD formats, with a bonus disc of B-sides, remixes and demo versions.

Meanwhile, ‘The Breathtaking Blue’ includes the single Romeos and brought about the innovative film ‘Songlines’, where nine directors did short movies inspired by one of the album tracks.

It went open to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, and accompanies the 1LP and 2CD sets on a bonus DVD.

Singer Marian Gold and keyboardist Bernhard Lloyd were both involved in the remastering process, and each release comes with a booklet containing rare and unreleased photos.

“When our first album emerged from the smut of the Here and Now and our second led back to our roots in Sugar Candy Mountain,” says Marian.

“Then ‘The Breathtaking Blue’ was our ‘I don’t give a s**t’ album, a self-indulgent arrogant blind shot over the shoulder into the future with our backs to the audience.”

Adds Bernhard: “The crazy endeavor to turn the entire album into the film ‘Songlines’ actually worked out in a wondrous way.

“A separate short film for each song, from directors all across the world – a project ahead of its time almost 35 years ago.

“The treasure of original 35mm film tapes have been recovered, the tapes meticulously restored and digitalized.

“Now, these films can finally be enjoyed in all of their beauty. It’s a completely new experience.”

Both albums are released on May 7
