The BBC has reportedly axed the annual ‘Top Of The Pops’ Christmas special.
Having aired originally in 1964, the festive edition of the chart show has continued to air on a yearly basis following its weekly axing in 2006.
However, according to reports the 2023 special will not air for the first time in 57 years.
“[BBC] bosses felt the cost involved in creating a one-off show like this were too high to justify,” sources tell The Sun.
Creating the studio and bringing together a string of artists to perform for just this programme required a disproportionate amount of resources.
“But it will be seen as the sad end of an era by millions of Brits who saw it as a Christmas Day must-watch along with the Queen’s Speech.”
In its first year, the ‘Top of the Pops’ Christmas Special aired on Christmas Eve, before moving to the December 25 spot in 1965, where it remained in the years that followed.
Meanwhile, BBC Radio 2 and Official Charts Company recently revealed the most-streamed UK Christmas No. 1 singles of all time.
Ahead of the 2022 festivities, DJ Steve Wright has revealed the Top 40 most-streamed Christmas No. 1s of all time, based on the number of times each song has been streamed, all year round, since records began.
