Tom Aspaul’s new album ‘Life In Plastic’ is the second in a trilogy of records from the rising pop star.
Hot on the heels of his 2020 debut ‘Black Country Disco’ and the 2021 remix LP ‘Black Country Discothéque’, he returned in May this year with his sophomore effort.
Speaking in the July 2022 issue of Retro Pop, Tom reveals the record is a continuation of his debut and confirms a sequel is on the way.
“Album three will be part of the trilogy,” he smiles, before admitting, “and then after that I have no idea…
“Part of me is thinking, ‘Will I go into managing other artists and writing their music, helping them set up as an artist?’ Maybe I could do that, or maybe doing music production for other artists is something I’m interested in. Because ‘Life In Plastic’ was pretty much all produced by me with Gil Lewis.
“So the idea of writing for other people is something that I’m hesitant to get back into, because I didn’t have a great experience towards the end of my songwriting career, but I’m a bit more confident in terms of what I can do as a producer now. So, that’s sort of like my mid-term plan.”
Before he puts out the follow-up to ‘Life In Plastic’, Tom is planning to release a deluxe versions and a covers project – although he remained tight-lipped about the kind of songs we can expect from the EP.
He teases: “It’s not going to be part of the album cycle, but you know Lady Gaga does a jazz album every now and then?
“I’m not saying I’m doing a jazz album, but I’d like to do something a bit more organic with a band, because I feel like I’ve gone so far this way with ‘Life In Plastic’ that I feel like I need to do something a bit more grounded.”
