Steps could be set to return to the stage for their first tour in five years.
The chart-topping group launched into the charts with their 1997 hit single, ‘5,6,7,8’, and went on to release three albums, including the No. 1 smash, ‘Steptacular’, alongside chart-topping singles ‘Tragedy’, ‘Heartbeat’ and ‘Stomp’.
After calling it quits in 2001, they made a triumphant return in 2017 to celebrate their 20th anniversary with ‘Tears on the Dancefloor’ and now, a decade later – which spawned two more albums, an updated best-of, three headline tours and an original musical – plans are being discussed to mark 30 years since their debut.
Speaking on the Good Food podcast about Steps’ touring plans, band member Claire Richards teased: “Hopefully. It is our 30th anniversary next year, which I can’t quite believe.
“It doesn’t feel that long at all, and fingers crossed we’ll do something. We are not sure yet.”
Speaking in an exclusive cover feature in the September 2022 issue of RETROPOP, the group looked back on their pop legacy and revealed the significance of achieving 25 years in the music industry.
Singer Ian ‘H’ Watkins said: “When we released our first single, everybody laughed at us. All of the cool cats laughed at us. The record company big-wigs wanted us to go away and then with every single they laughed louder, they laughed harder.
“And then 25 years later, none of those cool cats are around, all those music execs have probably been ditched, and we’re still here.”
