Mariah Carey is hoping to lend her voice to the forthcoming TV adaptation of her hit memoir.
The Hero singer’s autobiography, ‘The Meaning of Mariah Carey’, was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, and became a No. 1 New York Times Best Seller after its first week of release.
Now, the diva is working on an adaptation of the project for TV, which will be helmed by Lee Daniels and likely be shaped into an eight-part series.
“Personally, I want a great actress,” she tells NME of the project. “I don’t think she has to be a great singer because I can sing all my songs the way I would as a little girl…
“One of the things people don’t know is that I do impressions. I can sound like me when I was younger.”
She adds: “I’ve watched a lot of movies and adaptations of people’s life stories and I’m like, ‘Why wouldn’t they just use that person’s voice?’
“I don’t wanna hear somebody else singing like The Great! I really don’t!”
Mariah first confirmed she was working with Daniels during a chat with fans on Twitter Spaces, as they shared their appreciation for her track Alone in Love, from Mariah’s self-titled debut album.
As they called for “justice” for the song, which the musician began writing aged 14, she said: “Can I tell you where I think the justice is gonna really come for you guys?
“In the movie. In the Lee Daniels adaptation that we’re filming. And I’m not allowed to give too much away, but I spoke with him today.
“We didn’t talk about [Alone in Love] specifically, but I know that that needs to be really emphasised, because that was me playing it on my mum’s piano and there’s a whole bunch of things…”
The forthcoming project is not the first time Mariah and Lee have worked together; the pair collaborated on 2009 movie ‘Precious’, which he directed and produced and in which she starred, along with ‘The Butler’.
