Madonna wishes she hadn’t turned down a starring role in ‘The Matrix’.
The Queen of Pop has enjoyed a celebrated career onscreen, including roles in ‘Dick Tracy’ and ‘Evita’, for which she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy.
Speaking on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’, Madonna asked about reports she turned down an appearance in Vegas stripper flop ‘Showgirls’.
Confirming the rumours to be true, she also opened up about the roles she wishes she’d been more open to, including Catwoman in Tim Burton’s ‘Batman Returns’, which went to Michelle Pfeiffer.
“I saw them both, and I regret that I turned down Catwoman,” she said, admitting the part was “fierce”. “‘Showgirls’? No…”
The Express Yourself singer added: “I also turned down the role in ‘The Matrix’. Can you believe that? I wanted to kill myself.”
While the hitmaker didn’t reveal the part she was offered, Madonna is most likely referring to the film’s female lead Trinity, played by Carrie-Anne Moss.
“That’s like one of the best movies ever made,” she added. “A teeny-tiny part of me regrets just that one moment in my life.”
The star appeared on the show to promote her new ‘Madame X’ concert movie, streaming on Paramount+, which is accompanied by a live album.
In a review of the record, Retro Pop said ‘Madame X (Music From The Theater Xperience)’ “captures the ‘Madame X’ Tour and reaffirms that she is and remains at the top of her game”.
