Madonna, Shania Twain land in Top 5 of BBC’s All-time Female Artist Chart

Classic albums by Madonna and Shania Twain score entries in BBC Radio 2’s Official All-time Female Artist Chart. 

The chart features the best-selling albums by women, based on UK sales and downloads as compiled by the Official Charts Company.

It’s been released as part of the network’s celebrations for National Album Day, which this year has the theme of Women in Music.

Adele comes out on top with her 2011 album ‘21’ with more than 5 million sales, followed by Amy Winehouse’s 2006 effort ‘Back to Black’ at just under 4 million. 

Next up is Madonna’s ‘The Immaculate Collection’, released in 1990, at 3.8 million, while Shania comes in closely behind at 3.4 million with 1997’s ‘Come On Over’. 

Rounding out the Top 5 is Adele’s 2015 album ‘25’.

Laura Busson, Commissioning Executive for Radio 2, said: “Radio 2 is proud to support National Album Day by celebrating this year’s theme of Women in Music playing tracks from female artists all day. 

“The Top 30 chart is a wonderful reminder of the incredible contribution women have made – and continue to make – to the music industry, and congratulations to Adele on topping the chart.”

National Album Day is celebrating women in music with reissues of albums from stars including Kylie Minogue, Gabrielle, Belinda Carlisle, Dido, Stevie Nicks and more.
