Madonna shared details of her forthcoming biopic during an Instagram Live stream on Thursday.
The Crave hitmaker has teamed with screenwriter Diablo Cody on a film about her life and career and has been heavily involved with the curation of the forthcoming project.
During the hour-long Instagram Live, Madonna and Cody discussed where they were at with the film so far, with the hitmaker describing it as being about her “struggle as an artist trying to survive in a man’s world,” covering a journey she called “happy, sad, mad, crazy, good, bad and ugly”.
“It’s kind of like a form of therapy. And sometimes I get confused and forget that I’m writing about me, and I start to refer to me as ‘she.’ That’s a bit weird,” the 62-year-old superstar said.
The Material Girl singer went on to reveal the movie will cover her time “coming up as an artist in Manhattan in the early ‘80s” around artists including Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
It’ll also show the star writing her seventh US No. 1, Like a Prayer, with Patrick Leonard, “all the way to the end, all the way to the devastating experience with Pepsi”.
Madonna brokered a $5 million deal with Pepsi at the time that involved an advertisement playing the song, but after the notorious accompanying visual directed by Mary Lambert in 1989 stirred controversy for involving scenes with burning crosses and Madonna kissing and later having an erotic encounter with a Black saint, the company immediately pulled the campaign.
“I hope I can portray or express what a thrilling time that was for me in every time,” the hitmaker reflected.
She also shared her feelings on recording the soundtrack for Evita in London with Cody, saying she had “a few nervous breakdowns worried that I was going to be fired every day”.
The Papa Don’t Preach star has been teasing the project on social media and has posted a series of videos to her Instagram of the pair working on the movie.
