Kevin Rowland is finally happy with Dexys Midnight Runners’ second album ‘Too-Rye-Ay’ after remixing the LP for a 40th anniversary reissue.

Originally released in 1982, the album was a runaway hit, featuring the singles Come On Eileen and Jackie Wilson Said (I’m in Heaven When You Smile) and peaking at No. 2 in the charts, behind only Queen’s ‘The Game’.

However, the group’s frontman was never truly satisfied with the record and, despite pleading with label bosses to remix the release, has remained unhappy for four decades.

“Come On Eileen and one or two other tracks came out really well, but I feel that, largely, the mixes were too hard and there were too many effects on them that were a bit jarring to the ear and didn’t properly let the dynamics come through,” he tells Retro Pop’s November 2022 issue. “They denied the subtleties in the music.”

Marking its latest milestone, however, he’s finally been able to revisit the project and work on new mixes that allow the music to shine.

Of ‘Too-Rye-Ay as it should have sounded’, out October 14, he says: “I suppose some people will be attached to it. I know that this is better, but if they prefer the old one, great, so be it.

“It’s still out there and they don’t have to buy the new version if they don’t want to. But I’m really happy with how it sounds now. It really is ‘Too-Rye-Ay’ as it should have sounded.”

‘Too-Rye-Ay as it should have sounded’ is out October 14 and available to pre-order now.
