Katrina from Katrina & the Waves’ new album Hearts, Loves & Babys got its name from the classic song, I Can’t Give You Anything But Love.
In a new interview, the Walking On Sunshine hitmaker tells Retro Pop about her forthcoming release, which drops August 28th, and explains its unusual title came from the star’s love of Judy Garland’s rendition of the jazz standard.
“People keep saying, ‘Why did you misspell babies?’,” Katrina laughs. “I always knew of the Judy Garland version of I Can’t Give You Anything But Love from her Carnegie Hall album… It’s magnificent.
“I did it as a Christmas record two years ago, because I had done a version for a Christmas show for an ensemble” she recalls. “And then I thought, I’m gonna put that on this album.”
Katrina’s version of the track is a rare parred back moment on the record, which is an eclectic mix of anthemic pop-rock numbers and emotive ballads, and the only one of the 10 tracks not written by the singer herself.
However, its the lyrics of the tune that prompted Katrina to name the album Hearts, Loves & Babys, as she explains, “You know, she says ‘baby’ in there about 11 times…
“When I looked at all the lyrics [from the entire album], the three words that popped up constantly were ‘heart’, ‘love’ and ‘baby’,” she notes, clarifying, “It’s the ‘baby’ that’s the term of endearment – like, ‘Hey baby’.”
Hearts, Loves & Babys also features the singles Drive and I Want To Love Again, which are available to stream and download now. You can pre-order the album here.
