Jake Shears and Self Esteem are set to join the cast of the West End hit ‘Cabaret’.
The Scissor Sisters frontman and Mercury Prize-nominated singer-songwriter (AKA Rebecca Lucy Taylor) are the latest stars to land spots in director Rebecca Frecknall’s intimate revival, which opened in 2021 and won seven Olivier awards.
Eddie Redmayne originally appeared as the Emcee and Shears will take over from Mason Alexander Park when he debuts on September 25 at the Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre.
“It is my privilege and honour to play the Emcee in this incredible show,” says the star, who returned to the charts earlier this year with his second solo album, ‘Last Man Dancing’. I am especially excited to be sharing the stage with the force that is Self Esteem.
“This role has been a lifetime dream of mine and I couldn’t imagine a better production of it to be a part of.”
Meanwhile, Taylor will take over from Maude Apatow in the role originally performed by Jessie Buckley, of which she admits: “I’ve never made a secret of my love of theatre and I honestly couldn’t be more excited about getting to make my stage debut as one of the greatest leads of all time.
“I’ve joked for years that there’s no need for a Self Esteem musical really because Sally’s story covers most of the points and here we are. I am both artistically and emotionally raring to take on this challenge. Pinch me!”
Also joining the ‘Cabaret’ cast are Nathan Ives-Moiba as Clifford Bradshaw, Beverley Klein as Fraulein Schneider and Teddy Kempner as Herr Schultz. Emily Benjamin will continue as the production’s alternate Sally Bowles until mid-October when Nic Myers will take over.
