Bananarama are looking ahead to the group’s 40th anniversary in 2022.
While promoting their new memoir, Really Saying Something, Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward mused on a number of possibilities to mark the occasion, including new music and a Broadway play.
“We’re not going to give anything away because we don’t know that we’re doing anything,” Sara tells Pink News. “We haven’t got that far because, as we said, we’ve been very busy with the book… But when we’ve finished with that we will start to look at musical options.
“Maybe we’ll turn the book into a musical. A Broadway musical,” she offers.
The pair also discussed the option of a movie, with Keren quipping she’s “already asked Dawn [French] if she’ll play me if we make it into a film.”
Dawn, Jennifer Saunders and Kathy Burke have impersonated Bananarama on a number of occasions – including their iconic Bananarama/Lananeeneenoonoo collaboration Help! and for a sketch on their classic comedy series.
Of the sketch, Sara laughs: “It was flattering. And yet when you actually watch it, years later, it’s actually quite rude. Really rude!
“But I suppose that is the essence of comedy, isn’t it, to take things to extremes, pick on a certain thing and make it 10 times worse, but I thought it was hilarious.”
It’s been a rare period of downtime for Bananarama during the pandemic, and Keren adds that she “cannot even see [touring] happening next year” – unless a vaccine is widely available. However, they insist they’ll be back to celebrate four decades.
“For the 40th anniversary there’ll be something happening there,” Sara affirms.
