Ashanti has revealed plans to re-record her Grammy-winning debut album.
The 2002 self-titled LP saw the star nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best Contemporary R&B Album – which she won.
It spawned the hit singles Foolish, Happy and Baby and featured collaborations with Gotti, Ja Rule, and the late The Notorious B.I.G., and now Ashanti is revisiting the project once again.
Speaking on The Breakfast Club this week, she explained: “So as an artist, when you are in the game for a certain amount of time, you pay your dues and things are supposed to come back to you.
“You have a legal team that does what they’re supposed to do so that you can function and own [your work]. So with my album being 20 years old in April (2022), obviously it makes sense for me to go in and re-record so that I can collect my coins.”
Addressing any potential changes to the LP, she added: “It’s not necessarily changing the vibe, but kinda just injecting something new, sonically, into it. And maybe I might put some [new] features in there.”
The star has since released a further four albums – including her most recent record ‘Braveheart’ in 2014 – which was issued on her independent record label Written Entertainment after she departed Murder Inc Records.
