George Michael would be ‘beside himself’ at Wham!’s Last Christmas reaching the Christmas No. 1 spot, according to Andrew Ridgeley.
The 1984 classic is currently sitting atop the UK Singles Chart, having beaten Sam Ryder’s You’re Christmas To Me and All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey to the summit.
Speaking to Official Charts following the duo’s latest milestone, Ridgeley says: “George would be beside himself after all of these years to finally obtain Christmas No. 1. It’s mission accomplished.
“It was a huge disappointment to us both when it didn’t reach No1 because in our opinion, it was nailed on. Had it not been for Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? it probably would have been No. 1.
“It’ll mean a lot to Wham!’s legacy, it’s the crowning glory.”
On the trajectory of the song, which finally hit the top spot on New Year’s Day 2021 and had topped the charts every year since, he adds: “Last Christmas was conceived as a Christmas No. 1. Lofty ambitions, but Yog set lofty ambitions for himself as a songwriter.
“Our fans will have a real sense of achievement and pride in the fact it’s become a Christmas No. 1.”
