Allie X offers up one of the most eclectic and fascinating albums of the year so far with ‘Girl With No Face’.
With striking production and vocal delivery ranging from eerie to electric, the Canadian singer-songwriter has mastered her craft at creating left-field pop that feels distinctive to her unique brand.
Taking inspiration from artists such as Depeche Mode and The Human League, the album opens with the looming Weird World, jam-packed with personality and evocative of a stalker looming in the woods in the depths of the night.
The record has haunting melodies and graphic lyricism throughout, all of which combine to create a listen that proves captivating and mesmerising, with vocals that shift from whispers to belts, to effortlessly gliding across pulsating productions with a soaring delivery.
Off With Her Tits is one of the wackiest singles of recent years and is primed to be screamed along to at the artist’s live shows. It’s one of many tracks that taps into a sound somewhere between Chappell Roan and Caroline Polachek, with balls-to-the-wall and full throttle quality, all whilst remaining extremely chic and cool. Galina is another gem; slinky and featuring all the twinkly synthesisers you could want, it’s an anthemic, late-night boogie with chaotic energy delivered in spades.
Following her 2020 dark-pop album, ‘Cape God’, this whole record has a glossy through line that makes ‘Girl With No Face’ its complete own world and era compared to her previous releases. With bizarre instrumentation choices and arresting performances, it’s hard to divert attention, as each song feels like another chapter to the story of the titular, faceless character.
Lead single, Black Eye, is another perfectly dizzy moment that encapsulates the glitchy, digital imagery the album tries to convey and is indicative of the rest of the body of work, which sets her apart from her peers in the industry.
Exciting from start to finish and with nuances surfacing with every listen, ‘Girl With No Face’ proves simply irresistible!
