Singer Wes Madiko, better known as Wes, has died. 

The Cameroon-born star, who scored a UK Top 20 hit in 1997 with his track Alane, passed away on June 25 aged 57, according to local reports from Orne, France, where he resided. 

It is believed the vocalist was admitted to hospital in Alençon, where he sadly died after undergoing surgery, due to a nosocomial infection. 

A statement from his family and friend/co-producer Djily Smith reads:  “A legend has passed away, leaving us a final message of peace for humanity on his hospital bed which will be shared with you in the days to come.

Regarded as the King of World Music in his native Cameroon, the star also found international fame when his composition In Youpendi appeared in Disney’s ‘The Lion King II’.

Last summer, Wes teamed up with German DJ Robin Schulz for an updated take on Alane. 

“I can not believe it… We have just lost a beautiful person,” he said on social media after receiving the news. 

“It was a real honor to work you! My thoughts are with his family and his friends. Rest in peace Wes.”
