Madonna made her triumphant return to the stage on Thursday, June 24 for a performance at the Boom Boom Room in New York City.
Following the Like a Prayer star’s ‘Madame X’ Tour in 2019/2020, the singer was forced to take some downtime, during which she underwent surgery for an injury she incurred while on the road.
And after a period depending on crutches, Madonna proved she’s back fighting fit as she helped kick off New York City’s Pride weekend.
For the set, the Queen of Pop donned a vintage Tripp NYC top, leather shorts and a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier corset, along with a bondage-inspired harness that appeared to read ‘Not My President’ in sequinned letters.
She rounded off the look with a new blue wig and long pink fingerless gloves for the performance, during which she sang her classic hit Hung Up and recent release I Don’t Search I Find.
Madonna announced the appearance earlier in the day, revealing she was “throwing this party because Pride needs to be celebrated with a community of people who understand and know the meaning of oppression and fighting for freedom!”
“I can never forget that NYC and the LGBTQ+ Community gave me life from day ONE!!!!!!” she added.
That day also saw her auction off Polaroid photos of herself to benefit three New York organisations: Ali Forney Center, Haus of US and The Door.
In total, the star raised over $100,000 for the causes.
The appearance comes after Madonna recently took to social media to hint at a “reinvention” – two years after the release of her 14th studio al bum ‘Madame X’.
Alongside a series of selfies showing the star stripped down to a black leather-look bra and matching boy shorts, she penned: “New Life New York Re-Invention ……….”
Often lauded as the Queen of Reinvention due to the distinctive sounds and styling of her various eras, Madonna even named her 2004 Tour ‘Re-Invention’.
However, the ‘Madame X’ era isn’t over yet, as the Like a Virgin hitmaker is set to release a concert movie and documentary from the album’s accompanying world tour in October 2021.
