Mariah Carey has covered Fame classic Out Here On My Own as the second single to be taken from her new album The Rarities.
The track, which follows lead single Save The Day, was recorded by the star in 2000 and, according to an excerpt from her forthcoming memoir, was one of the first songs she performed to an audience during a talent contest her mother entered her into when she was a young girl.
“I felt ‘Out Here On My Own’ described my entire life, and I loved singing that way – singing to reveal a piece of my soul,” she explains. “And I won doing it.
“I couldn’t believe I won a trophy for singing a song I love,” Mariah continues. “It was the first time I’d received validation as an artist. What a feeling.”

The hitmaker goes on to reflect on the influence Irene Cara, who played the role of Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film, had on her personally, sharing, “[She] was everything to me.
“I related to her multicultural look (Puerto Rican and Cuban), her multitextured hair, and, most importantly, her ambition and accomplishments.”
The Rarities comes amid Mariah’s #MC30 celebrations, which have also featured weekly digital EPs and a complete re-release of the hitmaker’s back catalogue on vinyl. The new record is released October 2nd.
