Former Kraftwerk star Wolfgang Flür unites an all-star ensemble of collaborators on his latest solo LP.
‘Magazine 1’ is the first in a trilogy of recordings from the percussionist and features appearances from Midge Ure (Ultravox), Peter Hook (New Order) and Claudia Brücken (Propaganda), alongside legendary Techno DJs Juan Atkins and Carl Cox and electropop titans U96.
The result is a concept piece that juxtaposes timeless electronic trends with topical lyrics about the world we live in today and the shared strife we experience as a result of daily living.
Opener Magazine, with its heavy synths and drum machines, invites you in, while Zukunftsmusik, one of three U96 collaborations, is an otherworldly electronic extravaganza.
On Das Beat, a collaboration with Ure, the pair celebrate the universal nature of music with the occasional nod back to Flür’s Kraftwerk days, while Birmingham, featuring Hook and Brücken, is an instant standout.
As the first in a series, ‘Magazine 1’ whets the appetite and leaves you wanting more – but if he keeps up the momentum throughout, the project could quite possibly become a modern classic.
