Wolfgang Flür was furious when he discovered his Kraftwerk bandmates had turned down a collaboration with David Bowie.

The late Starman visited the electronic music group on their ‘Station To Station’ German tour and, according to Flür, asked the group to produce his next project.

However, after an evening out with bandmate Florian Schneider, it was decided that they wouldn’t go ahead with the collaboration – much to Flür’s anger.

“I always wondered why they decided not to do it, as we all loved David Bowie and his music. He had visited us on his ‘Station To Station’ German tour and wanted to have us produce him as he was a huge fan of Kraftwerk,” he tells the April 2022 edition of Retro Pop, ahead of the release of his solo album ‘Magazine 1’.

“Both Florian and David went out for a nice dinner in a restaurant and talked about it all evening but in the end, Florian declined to work with him as he believed the music was so different and that he didn’t want to mix the culture of Germany and England to the music.

“David was very sad about it so he went off to Berlin and soon after began work on what became ‘Low’…”

He adds: “I was a bit enraged about it all. I couldn’t understand what they meant and why they had declined.

“But Kraftwerk wanted to be on their own and in the end, Kraftwerk never did produce anyone else and never did a collaboration.

“We could have done it for money, but money was never the problem, it was about doing our own thing.”
