V V Brown has shared an empowering music video for her latest single Black British – the singer-songwriter’s first new music in eight years.
Having shared the first single from the follow-up to her third studio album ‘Glitch’ (2015) last month, Brown has released an accompanying visual that embodies the themes of the powerful song.
Featuring the musician delivering an interpretive routine to the track alongside an ensemble of all-Black performers, the visual is part of an extended world around her latest project, which will “combine the medium of essay writing and journalism”.
Brown will also publish an essay exploring her idea of being Black British and providing social commentary on her ethnicity and subculture.
Of her long-awaited return, she says: “The last six years have been a difficult mental health journey for me. But I came to the realisation that I need music to feel alive.”
Crediting living in the countryside for “liberating” and allowing her “to create without that industry pressure,” she adds: “Everything about this album, whether it be the artwork, the lyrics, the production or the visuals, is about starting sociological conversations.”
“Art should make you feel, whether that’s feeling uncomfortable, empowered, happy, sad, scared, inspired. There is a radical power in the role of the provocateur and this was one of the motives for this record.”
The release of new material also sees Brown return to the stage for her first live performance, ‘V V Brown: An Intimate Musical Experience’, in over 10 years.
Taking place at The Lower Third on May 23, tickets are on sale now.
