Tiffany channels her inner rock chick across her storming new album ‘Shadows’.
The eighties teen superstar may be best known for her breakout hit I Think We’re Alone Now, but on her latest 11-track collection she shows off her vocal chops, proving that after 35 years she’s still got it.
Opening with electric guitar and rolling drums, Hey Baby serves as a reintroduction to the singer, who takes command over the set with a masterful performance throughout.
‘Everything that I desire / You’re my sweetest sound / Hey baby do you know / I never wanna let you go,’ she sings, as a reintroduction to fans, while lead track I Like The Rain reflects on the highs and lows she’s experienced throughout her life and career, concluding they all make her the person we see today.
Title track Shadows sees the star ‘hanging on like shadows in the dark’ to a lost love, with a Blondie influence that soon becomes an album highlight, before a string of mid tempo cuts and tender ballads showcase Tiffany’s versatility.
Over time, her voice has matured with a subtle rasp that brings out the emotion in her tone and elevates tracks like I’ll Meet You Anywhere and You’re My Everything to new heights.
Before the album ends, the volume is turned up to 11 once again with the rocking Keep On Swinging, a testament to her work ethic and a career that’s lasted three decades and counting. ‘Where there’s a will, there’s a way / I work hard cos at the end of the day / The Lord helps those that help themselves,’ she sings over an electrifying guitar riff, one of the strongest instrumentals on the LP.
Closing with a soaring vocal on Bed of Nails, the track is a testament to her career; for years, she was pigeonholed as a teen pop star, but in the decades since her breakout she’s nurtured her style and crafted a musical identity that represents Tiffany – the person – as she stands today.
Fans of her early output, beware: ‘Shadows’ is a different beast altogether. But listen with fresh ears and you’ll rediscover Tiffany, born again, with a fresh sound that’s both bold and brilliant.
