Simon Cowell’s hit TV talent show ‘The X Factor’ has been axed by UK network ITV after 17 years on air.

The show debuted in 2004 and discovered global superstars including Leona Lewis, One Direction and Little Mix.

But according to reports, the programme has been shelved by the network, with Simon allegedly agreeing to the decision based on falling ratings.

Can you believe it's 10 years this year since I was a judge on the X Factor ! And today, after 17 years the show has come to an end. What's your favourite moment from the panel ? pic.twitter.com/uxXHvWKmoT

A spokesperson for ITV said: “There are no current plans for the next series of The X Factor at this stage.”

Following the announcement, past contestants and judges reflected on the end of the hit series, with Take That’s Gary Barlow – who sat on the panel from 2011-2013 writing: “Can you believe it’s 10 years this year since I was a judge on the X Factor!

“And today, after 17 years the show has come to an end. What’s your favourite moment from the panel?”

Following the news, insiders told The Sun:  “Globally, it is still a phenomenon and rakes in millions every year. But in the UK, there is no question it has become slightly stale.

“Simon remains at the top of his game and knows how to make a hit. He owns the rights to the show, and it’s his call — not ITV’s — whether or not he drops it.

“Clearly the last thing he wants is for ‘X Factor’ to fizzle out with a whimper and become a bit of a joke — especially in contrast to the show in its pomp.

“It is still on the back-burner and there’s the option to return it in 2023, with auditions next summer, but a lot will ride on his new format ‘Walk The Line’.”

The new programme will see contestants perform in front of Simon and a celebrity judging panel, but network sources insist it’s a gameshow and not a talent contest.

The top two performers of the night can either cash out or stay in the competition for a potentially bigger prize – putting their earnings so far at risk.

An air date has yet to be confirmed.
