The Overtones take notes from the past and look to a bright future on their new album ‘10’.
A decade is a lifetime in the music industry and The Overtones have seen more than their share of euphoric highs and devastating lows over the past 10 years.
Through the tragic death of former frontman Timmy Matley, subsequent departure of Lockie Chapman and addition of latest member Jay James, it’s their love of music that held the group together.
That legacy is celebrated from the very start of ‘10’ with Gambling Man 2.0, a reworking of the band’s self-penned breakout hit, with a slick new production that elevates the classic Overtones sound.
From single Rose Tinted to covers of disco classics like Celebration and A Night to Remember, Julian Hinton’s production is crisp and built around the group’s tight vocals, which remain front and centre.
The album also introduces new voices into the mix; Michael Ball joins the ensemble for a new take on Frankie Valli’s Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, while Marisha Wallace stuns on Simply Red’s Stars.
Despite the imbalance between covers and originals, it’s the group’s own contributions that stand out and have us longing for more self-penned offerings next time round.
‘10’ is a celebration of what The Overtones do best and, in closing out a decade-long chapter of the group’s legacy, it opens up new possibilities for what’s to come.
