Sybil has revealed she’s working on her first studio album in 35 years.
In 1986, the New Jersey-born vocal powerhouse launched onto the music scene with a series of singles that made waves on both sides of the Atlantic.
Having broken into the UK Top 40 with the single Let Yourself Go, she rocketed to the Top 5 of the US Dance charts with its follow-up My Love Is Guaranteed, before a pair of Dionne Warwick covers – of Don’t Make Me Over and Walk On By – saw her rise to global prominence.
In the years that followed, she released six studio albums and scored massive success with tracks such as The Love I Lost and the Mike Stock/Pete Waterman-penned-and-produced When I’m Good and Ready.
Speaking to Retro Pop’s October 2022 issue, the hitmaker reveals she’s back in the studio recording tracks for her first long-player since 1997 release ‘Still A Thrill’.
“I’m excited because Ultra Naté and I – I actually did a project for her Deep Sugar label years ago, a record called Troubled Waters – we were working together in the UK about a month and a half ago,” she shares.
“I asked her, ‘Do you have the stems for the songs that we did?’ She went in and she called me so excited – [she found] six records we had done!
“I’ve got probably upwards of 15 or 20 really, really strong records, so we’re going to pull them together and see what can be created. So I’m excited.
“We’re hoping 2023 will be a really good year.”
Looking back on the 35th anniversary of her breakthrough, the singer-songwriter also revealed she’s not a fan of her version of Don’t Make Me Over.
“To be honest, I hated it,” she confesses. “I didn’t hate her version, I just hated it for me, and it was not until Tony King, Phil Harding and the guys at PWL did a remix of it, which was off the back of the Soul II Soul vibe, that I said, ‘Oh my God, I really love it.’
“To me, it didn’t work the way it was in its original form, but when they changed the groove it made sense.”
