As the fifth and final season of ‘Stranger Things’ came to an end on New Year’s Day, it was David Bowie‘s classic 1977 track ‘Heroes’ that soundtracked its final moments.
Split into three volumes, the latest edition of the show saw the group of friends unite one last time, on the anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance, to battle Vecna.
Starring Finn Wolfhard, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Maya Hawke, and Millie Bobby Brown, it’s helped attract a new audience for the likes of Kate Bush, Diana Ross, ABBA and others, with Bowie the latest artist to benefit from its platform.
Speaking to ‘Netflix Tudum’, ‘Stranger Things’ co-creator Ross Duffer explained its inclusion, revealing that the song was chosen upon the suggestion of actor Joe Keery, who plays Steve Harrington in the series, and also releases music under the alias Djo.
“Once Joe said that, we immediately knew that was the right song to end the show on because it is, in some ways, an anthem for ‘Stranger Things’,” he said (via NME).
“To use the original Bowie version just felt right and fitting for the conclusion.”
Co-written with Brian Eno, ‘Heroes’ became one of the late music icon’s signature anthems after being released a single from his album of the same name.
