Steps have their sights set on a jukebox musical inspired by the band’s biggest hits.
The group, which debuted in 1997 with 5,6,7,8, have gone on to become one of the UK’s biggest pop acts with a career lasting 25 years.
With classic hits like One For Sorrow, Deeper Shade of Blue and Stomp, along with new tunes like Scared of the Dark, What The Future Holds and Take Me For a Ride, the band is keen to string together a narrative soundtracked by their chart smashes.
Revealing ambitions to fulfil their legacy as Britain’s answer to ABBA with a ‘Mamma Mia!’ style show, Ian ‘H’ Watkins tells Attitude: “We’ve been talking about it for years – the Steps musical.
“It’s just the perfect pop progression of telling a story through our songs. There are cogs turning.”
Claire Richards added: “We’ve talked about it among ourselves very seriously.”
The group appear on the cover of the LGBTQ+ title’s current Awards issue, after taking home the Icon prize during a ceremony last weSteps release their latest album ‘What The Future Holds Pt. 2’ in September, featuring the singles Heartbreak in this City (feat. Michelle Visage), Take Me For a Ride and The Slightest Touch.
In a review of the album, Retro Pop said ‘What The Future Holds Pt. 2’ is packed with “wall-to-wall pop precision” and “paves the way for the band’s 25th anniversary celebrations in 2022”.
