Sheryl Crow shares her concerns about AI in the title song from her new album, ‘Evolution’.
The single is the second to be lifted from the Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer’s 11th LP, following previous release Alarm Clock, and sees the singer-songwriter muse on the “unsettling” technology.
“[Theoretical scientist] Stephen Hawking worried that AI would replace humans. As a mom, I want to leave a better world for my children, a healthier planet,” explains the mum of two.
“Is AI going to be a benevolent partner in these goals or not? It’s unsettling, and this song deals with those anxieties.”
On how the track came about, she adds: “I wrote the song with just me on guitar and vocals, sent it to [producer] Mike Elizondo and said, this is bigger than me, can you take a crack at it?”
Also featured on the single is Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello, with Crow adding of his guitar solo: “To me, Tom’s playing comes from some other planet.
“It’s a cool bit of kismet that we were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in the same year, and his solo on ‘Evolution’ just ejects you into space.”
