SG Lewis reaches new heights with his superb second album ‘AudioLust & HigherLove’.
A project of two halves – part all-out disco stormers, along with a selection of more laid-back, ambient offerings – the album showcases the versatility of the singer, songwriter and producer with his most varied work to date.
Of the collection, he says: “The album is clearly split into two worlds. ‘AudioLust’ is the darker, lusty, infatuated, short-lived, and ego-driven version of love. The second half represents a much deeper, actualized, and fulfilled version of love. Songs fall on either half of the record. I feel like I exist in the space between DJing and being an artist.
“The bulk of the album was written across a series of intensive studio residencies in the height of the pandemic, with the help of some incredibly talented friends, and allowed me to explore myself as an artist in a way that I would never have dared before.”
Launching with pre-release track Infatuation following an extended intro, what stands out immediately is the quality of the music and the depth of the lyrics; a combination that always shines through Lewis’ tracks.
This time around, it seems more refined than ever on moments like pre-breakup number Holding On (a storming electronic number with a stellar guitar solo) and comedown track Plain Sailing, which boasts impressive layered harmonies. It makes for a collection that, much like its creator, refuses to be pigeon holed, acting instead as a musical sandbox without boundaries.
The album features a number of guest appearances, with Tove Lo contributing vocals to Call On Me and Ty Dolla $ign guesting on the Lucky Daye collaboration Vibe Like This, both of which showcase his production prowess and adaptability when working with artists across genre lines.
On his first album, 2021’s ‘Times’, Lewis proved himself a pop force, attracting a fanbase across demographics and earning the respect of industry greats like Nile Rodgers and Robyn, both of whom featured on his initial record. This time around, his voice is front and centre on the majority of tracks, proving himself not only to be a fine producer, but a superb pop star who, by all accounts, is destined for greatness.
