Ronan Keating pays tribute to his native Ireland on heartfelt new album ‘Songs From Home’.
The LP features a mix of cover versions and original compositions from the Boyzone singer, who set out to record “a passionate collection of songs that remind me of my home”.
The result is a mid-tempo set of 12 tracks that see the Boyzone frontman tap into his heritage through classic sounds of Ireland and songs written and popularised by some the country’s best-loved exports.
Opening with a rendition of Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh’s 1946 poem ‘On Raglan Road’, which was released as the single Raglan Road by The Dubliners 25 years later, other renditions on the LP including Into The Mystic (Van Morrison), Where The Streets Have No Name (U2) and Guiding Light (Foy Vance).
It’s an album rooted in storytelling and Ronan’s vocal sounds strong, rested and refreshed, and exudes a clear passion for his homeland.
‘Songs From Home’ feels like Ronan’s most intimate offering yet and, while fans of his more pop-oriented releases might struggle with takes on traditional songs like The Parting Glass, the hand-picked selection of covers makes for a compelling listen.
There are also a number of collaborations; No Frontiers is an elegant collaboration with fellow singer and inspiration, Mary Black, while his covers of Damien Rice’s The Blower’s Daughter and Mic Christopher’s Heyday feature wife Storm.
The album might not be Ronan’s most creative or commercial offering, but it’s a body of work worthy of a place in his catalog and will no doubt be lapped up by devout fans and casual listeners alike.
‘Songs From Home’ is available on CD. Cassette and signed editions are available via Ronan’s online store.
