Rick Astley’s 1988 hit Together Forever got a surprise 2021 revival thanks to ‘The Voice US’ coaches, who covered the tune in a new promo for the show.
The singer’s classic track gave Rick his second US No. 1 in the late ’80s, when it was released as the fourth single from his debut album, ‘Whenever You Need Somebody’, and is making waves once again thanks to the new cover.
In the clip, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Nick Jonas don their best ’80s attire to recreate the retro video for the Stock Aitken Waterman-produced track.
Performing in front of a coloured background, Blake and Kelly accentuate their looks with big shoulder pads, while John wears a black leather jacket and white T-shirt combo.
Nick wears an acid washed denim overall and matching jacket, with the visual recreating the camera angles, dance moves and close-ups from the classic MTV era.
In a reaction clip, Rick reveals how the video originally came into fruition, explaining: “Somebody said, ‘Right, we’re shooting a video in the morning, We’ve got a shiny background. We’ve got coloured lights. And we’ve got some dancers… Hey, we’ve got a video!’
“That was kind of what videos were like sometimes back in the ’80s.”
As the opening seconds of the clip play, the Never Gonna Give You Up hitmaker appears thrilled by the homage, laughing and declaring: “That is priceless… all my dreams have just come true!”
Rick scored two US chart-toppers, with Never Gonna Give You Up – also a UK No. 1 – and Together Forever, which was held off the top spot by Kylie Minogue’s I Should Be So Lucky in the UK.
Rick released his most-recent, eighth studio album, ‘Beautiful Life’, in 2018, which saw the singer return to the UK Top 10.
The following year, he dropped a two-disc Greatest Hits collection, ‘The Best of Me’, containing disc of old recordings and a second set of new interpretations of his classic hits.
Season 20 of ‘The Voice US’ premieres on NBC on March 1.
