Pussycat Dolls star Kimberly Wyatt has opened up about the group’s decision not to record Lady Gaga’s breakout hit Just Dance.
The band – also starring Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts, Carmit Bachar, Melody Thornton and Jessica Sutta – were presented with the star’s 2008 track but opted not to record the song.
She told new! magazine: “Lady Gaga wrote ‘Just Dance’ for the Dolls. It certainly wasn’t my choice to turn it down.
“She went on to make it a massive hit and it broke her career, so ultimately it was meant to be hers.
“So if there’s one song I regret not working on, it’s probably that.”
Pussycat Dolls released two albums – ‘PCD’ (2005) and ‘Doll Domination’ (2008) – and scored hits such as Buttons, Don’t Cha, When I Grow Up, I Hate This Part and I Don’t Need a Man.
In 2019, they returned with comeback track React and had planned to embark on a UK Tour while working on new music.
However, the shows were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and last January Nicole announced the plans had been dropped entirely.
Admitting she only found out the run had been cancelled through a fan’s Twitter post, Kimberly added: “The way it was communicated wasn’t nice or kind to most of us.
“I found out through a fan’s tweet. I was devastated and cried my eyes out. We were planning a world tour and were even booked for Glastonbury.”
It comes after the group was shrouded in legal issues when founder Robin Antin sued Nicole Scherzinger over allegations she wanted complete control over the future of the band.
According to papers filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court, Robin and Nicole came to a deal for a reunion tour and a new Pussycat Dolls business venture in late 2019.
While the Stuckwitchu singer originally agreed to receive 49 per cent of potential earnings, Robin says Nicole now “refuses to participate in the tour” and has “demanded to renegotiate the terms” of their agreement.
However, in response to the filing, Nicole’s lawyer claimed it’s a “desperate attempt to divert blame for her own failures by trying to impose obligations on Nicole that simply do not exist”.
“Nicole loves and respects the PCD fans and hopes to one day be back on stage performing the group’s amazing hits for them,” they added. “Sadly, this will not happen under these circumstances.”
