Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark have postponed their planned live stream show until next March (21).
The group was set to hit the stage for You Me & OMD at London’s Indigo at The O2 for a limited 200-capacity audience on October 24th, with the concert to be beamed to fans around the world.
However, amid frontman Andy McCluskey’s battle with the coronavirus, the group have “taken the heartbreaking decision to postpone” the show.
“Whilst there is nothing in the government’s new regulations that technically prevents us from proceeding with the event, we feel it would be against the spirit of the fight against the virus,” they explained, admitting they didn’t want fans from areas heavily affected by Covid-19 to transmit the disease by attending the show.
“Whilst Andy’s symptoms remain extremely mild and his isolation period is due to end in the coming days, it would be irresponsible to resume rehearsals with the rest of the band and crew.”
While ticket refunds are available, the group urged fans “to keep your ticket for the rescheduled date” and “if you are in a position to contribute… purchase some YOU ME & OMD merchandise or donate via the website” to help support the hitmakers’ touring crew.
“We can’t wait to get back on stage. We are absolutely devastated but know it will be worth the wait,” they added. “Thank you for your understanding and all your contributions so far. Your support means the world.”
In a press release announcing the concert, Andy explained: “As a result of the pandemic, and seeing the plight of technical crew and suppliers in the music industry, we have decided to put our money where our mouths are.
“We want to raise money for the crew members who have been with us now for many years. All profit will be divided between our essential but unseen stars of OMD’s live performances.
“This concert will also employ theatre staff and generate income for audio, lighting companies, promoters and many more, and we couldn’t be more delighted to be able to give something back.”
Amid the star’s health battle, OMD previously revealed Andy only experienced “mild” symptoms of the coronavirus and is “feeling much better already”.
The You Me & OMD show is now scheduled for March 27th 2021.
