A documentary based on the rise and fall of Milli Vanilli is in the works.
The film, titled ‘Girl You Know It’s True’, will go behind the scenes of the duo’s early success in the late ’80s, including their Grammy win for Best New Artist, before it was revealed bandmates Fab Morvan and the late Rob Pilatus were just lip-syncing to tracks recorded by others.
And director Luke Korem plans to explore the group’s history deeper than ever before, with the project set to feature interviews with surviving member Morvan and the real musicians behind the vocals, along with previously-unseen footage.
“Milli Vanilli has made an indelible mark on music and pop culture history, yet the truth of what happened is more bizarre than anyone knows,” he tells Variety.
“There are so many layers, characters and twists that have never before been revealed. I’m elated to partner with MRC and share the truth behind what has been dubbed the greatest con in music history.”
‘Girl You Know It’s True’, named after the duo’s 1988 hit, is in production at MRC Non-Fiction.
Milli Vanilli debuted in 1988 and scored three consecutive US No. 1 hits with Baby Don’t Forget My Number, Blame It On The Rain and Girl I’m Gonna Miss You from their debut album.
An intended follow-up was recorded but, after it was revealed Morvan and Pilatus weren’t singing the tracks themselves, a new group – dubbed The Real Milli Vanilli – was formed, consisting of the actual vocalists behind the tunes.
Their LP ‘The Moment of Truth’ was released in 1991 but failed to chart in the UK and US. It was a Top 20 hit in Germany.
