‘Michael’ – the new biopic on the King of Pop, Michael Jackson – has overtaken the Freddie Mercury biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as the highest-grossing music biopic of all time.
The film, starring the ‘Billie Jean’ singer’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in the title role, has taken $911.9 million worldwide to-date (via Deadline), and as it’s only just debuted in Japan, could become the second title to cross $1 billion at the 2026 global box office, after Universal’s ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’.
The Lionsgate and Universal project is directed by Antoine Fuqua and produced by Graham King, who also served as producer on ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.
‘Michael’ has taken $358.6M at the domestic box office with $553.3M from international. Meanwhile, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ grossed $216.6M Stateside and $694.3M overseas.
It’s one of a number of records for the movie, which also scored the largest global opening weekend ever for a musical biopic, and is both the highest-grossing music biopic domestically and worldwide.
