Melanie C opened up on the impact the Spice Girls had on the LGBTQ+ community while on stage at the 2022 Attitude Awards.
The pop legend was the recipient of the magazine’s Honorary Gay prize at this year’s event, which took place at the Roundhouse in Camden, London on Wednesday night.
Speaking while accepting the award, she said: “When the Spice Girls started, we had no idea how we were affecting the LGBTQ+ community.
“At the time, we were completely unaware that the profound support we felt had a much deeper and more important meaning. Our attitude was loud and proud. We embraced our individuality with confidence and wouldn’t be told what we could or couldn’t do.
“As my career has progressed, it’s become more and more important for me to speak up for those that don’t feel they have a voice. I will continue to kick down the barriers as hard as I can – until I can’t high kick anymore,” she vowed, before joking: “Which will be never!”
Closing her speech, Melanie added: “I take my role as an ally seriously and I don’t always get it right. But I will continue to listen, learn and educate as much as I can.”
The event, powered by Jaguar, celebrates the biggest LGBTQ+ names from film, TV, music and theatre.
